Timber Rattlesnakes Live in Trees

A Collection of Old Codger Humor Stories

by Allen Englebright; cover illustration by Bryan Hand

Timber Rattlesnakes Live in Trees is a collection of sixty brief stories published in The Prairie Press, a rural Paris, Illinois, newspaper. Depending on the depth of one’s sense of humor, these delightful narrations emit a combination of laughter, chuckles, grins, and smiles. The characters emerge from various professions in different settings, chiefly from the author’s home region, but also from scattered other states, and as far distant as Australia. They’re brought to life in schools, churches, sports events, workplaces, cars, ships, airplanes, homes, and on the farm. Some of these stories seem unbelievable, but all are based on real people or actual events. The author speaks the language of a good ol’ country boy who sits in a coffee shop or some similar loafing place, and holds your undivided attention with one story after another.  He claims that his readers should be awarded college credits. Each story has but one goal – to make you laugh.

allen-englebright-150It is only natural that Allen Englebright spent a career teaching school. His mother and three brothers were also teachers, not to mention his daughter, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Allen grew up on a farm in Wayne County, Illinois, and was educated at Eastern and Western Illinois Universities. Now retired, Big Al, as he is known to friends, interprets life—past, present, and future—through an historical lens and his own brand of humor in a weekly column called “Old Codger’s Humor” for The Prairie Press, a Paris, Illinois, newspaper.
