This book will not be what you expect. Chasing Shadows is one man’s quest to find answers to a childhood event. He brings his own doubts and skepticism to the forefront on each step of his journey and makes the validity of his conclusions based on evidence that he demands from each source all the more compelling. This book is not written to glamorize what he does nor uses a ghoul factor to get readers. There are points I laughed right out loud, was afraid and it also made me think. The thing that most impacted me is WHY Mr. Keyes does what he does. Just as in his profession of law enforcement he helps others, this is why he chases shadows. He wants resolutions for those that may have encountered hauntings, but more importantly those who need help finding their way home. I may not agree with some tools used to achieve the end result, but one cannot ignore the facts and evidence that is presented in this book as he shares some example of the cases he has explored. This is a thought provoking book and will leave you wanting the author to expand more on his journey and the tools/resources he and his team uses to bring closure for his clients and theses who walk in a realm we cannot or are not willing to see.

Honest and factual, yet thrilling. This book follows the professional life of Mark Keyes, who wears the dual hat of a law enforcement officer and a paranormal investigator. The point that makes this book stand out is how Mr. Keyes uses his ~15-year background as a PA State Trooper working everything from highway patrol to covert counter-narcotics as a skill set for conducting paranormal investigations. Not only does he contrast from typical popular TV “ghost hunters” by deferring to evidence and using the scientific method, but he enlists the full range of partners, from skeptics, like fellow officers and K-9 units, to psychics & mediums who only ride along after a thorough vetting process. Mke no mistake; his process isn’t fool-proof, but it’s convincing none-the-less.
The accounts are entertaining and often thrilling, making the reader think twice about what they see on TV or the movies. There is no preaching, no proselytizing, and no judgement; he writes what he sees, and isn’t afraid to give his opinion as just an opinion, leaving it up to you whether they are just the mind playing tricks, or provable phenomena recorded with proper equipment and trained personnel.
The most compelling part of the read is his chapter answering the question ‘which is more scary: ghosts or people?’ The answer may surprise you, but his story is full of sobering facts and mind-blowing fictions, which might change your mind about how you’d answer such a question.
Bottom line: you won’t drown in esoteric nonsense or sensationalism, but walking the beat the Mark Keyes will give you an appreciation for the facts, and open your mind to how a professional crime investigator tackles today’s ghost stories.
